Chambray All Day

So lately, life has been crazy.  I've taken on more responsibility at work, adopted a kitten in addition to my already rambunctious cat, and overall been more busy than I've ever been in my life.  Luckily, I'm back in the swing of things and I think life is now figured out enough where I have a regular posting schedule worked out.  Just starting out a blog is definitely a learning experience!

But back to our regularly scheduled programming...

I've had this chambray shirt in my closet for months, convinced that it was too boxy to actually work. Apparently, I just need to learn how to tuck things.  Paired with a bow top that was 5 euros at Primark and white jeans, it even makes for the perfect summer outfit!  I've also been wearing heels more and more often lately and gotta admit--these nude ones from Banana Republic might be my favorite pair currently in my closet.  The best part?  Right now, they're 40% off with the code COOL.  I had to physically restrain myself from buying them in other colors.

This is why we can have nice things.

My grandmother has always said that I have "champagne taste on a beer budget" and booooooooy, is that true.  I have a list of fashion items that I'd buy if I ended up winning the lottery.  Valentino Rockstuds, a Chanel 2.55 bag, and Christian Louboutin pumps are all on the list.

However, I am very decidedly not a millionaire.  Luckily, I've found the more preppy aesthetic that I favor tends to be done by the mid-price range American designers.  Unluckily, mid-price in fashion apparently still means several hundred dollars for a pair of boots or a bag.  I have a few strategies that I use to avoid going into serious debt over my love for designer goods and thought it'd be nice to share them with all of you.

1. Buy trendier pieces from fast-fashion stores and invest in classic pieces.
If you follow me on Instagram, you know by now that I'm a huge fan of the palm-printed fabrics that have taken over everyone's summer style.  Just like the famous Devil Wears Prada scene, trends trickle down and thanks to fast-fashion stores like H&M, Forever 21, and Zara, they are available almost right away.  Instead of investing in pieces that wouldn't necessarily be in trend next season, I bought a dress and romper from Old Navy for less than $25.  No regrets!

2. Wait for sales and use promo codes.
Have you noticed that all the big sales are based around American holidays?  Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day... BLACK FRIDAY.  Anyhow, those are always when the biggest sales typically are.  Because I don't exactly live in a shopping mecca, I have a tendency to buy online.  The secret?  Always google to see if there are any promo codes or better deals for your purchase.  It can end up making such a big difference!

3. Expand where you shop.
The one place I miss more than any other down here in Hilton Head is Nordstrom Rack.  I've found so many wonderful deals there, from my Paige denim jeans to my Tory Burch flats.  Lucky for me, they're now online as well!  Nordstrom Rack, Saks Off 5th, Neiman Marcus Last Call, and Bloomingdales Outlet are all fantastic locations to grab pieces for less, and trendy ones at that!  To top it off, I always manage to see some Kate Spade bags and jewelry in TJ Maxx.  The secret to these stores isn't to go in looking for specific items--if you do that, you might drive yourself a little crazy trying to track them down.  Go in and experience that rush of surprise of finding something you never thought you'd see on sale.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

originally $80 / on sale for $53

Y'all, it's that time of year again!  The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is always an epic event and this summer is no different.  Luckily, there's no Nordstrom here on Hilton Head, so maybe I won't be completely tempted into spending all my money I'm saving to go to France.  Unfortunately for my wallet, the sale is also online and it is HUGE.  I made the mistake of looking and already found about fifty things that I desperately want.  So maybe I can live vicariously through all of you.  I've linked some of my favorite steals from the sale below--shop them and think of me.

Anyone who knows me knows my love of cats.  Heck, I love cats so much that I ended up adopting a kitten last week to further my descent into crazy cat lady.  Luckily, somehow the Kate Spade folks have also developed a love of felines and now there are all different accessories to reflect that cattitude back into the world.  Behold... the objects below are basically my Christmas list this year.  As a black cat owner, I definitely need those earrings.

PS- I definitely bought the phone case.  And excuse if there are any typos.  I'm typing with one hand because there's a kitten asleep on my arm and I don't want to move it.  Cat power!

The New Classic

Y'all might remember how Brooks Brothers recently revealed itself to me as a place of actual style.  During their last sale, I became obsessed with their "gingham fun" shirt, and let me tell you--it is just as perfect in real life.  I love how it works for both dressing down and for work.  It'd be perfect with a navy pencil skirt or cute little crop dress pants.  However, on my day off, I decided to go the more casual route with some classic blue jeans.  Lucky for everyone who's not me and didn't fall in love right away, this shirt is still on sale in a few remaining sizes.

Subscription Box Showdown

In the past few years, there's been the trend of subscription beauty boxes.  Basically, you pay a company a set fee each month and they mail you a surprise array of items.  Of course, not all subscription beauty boxes are created equal.  Lucky for you, I'm what most would call an "impulse buyer," or what my mother would call "irresponsible."  I've tried several of them (and cancelled several of them) and like most things, I'm eager to share my opinions with you.  Check below for my favorites.

$24.99/month for Maven or $39.99/month for Maven Luxe
My favorite thing about Julep is that each month, you actually have the option to skip your box, although that may be difficult!  Julep is mainly known for their nail polishes, which are actually pretty dang amazing.  However, in my last box with them, I got their new lip crayons which are the most moisturizing, yet long-lasting things I've ever used.  They always have some pretty fun add-ons that you have the option to grab each month.  Overall, I like how customizable it is.  You get the surprise of curated items but a good deal of personal selection as well.  Even if I skip my box, I always appreciate the things Julep put together for it.

$10.00/month or $110.00/year

Birchbox is a great budget subscription and I've always loved their packaging.  Lately however, I feel like they've been moving towards having more skincare/hair products and less cosmetics.  There's nothing wrong with this, but if you're looking to mostly try new make-up, it might now be the subscription box for you.  I don't currently subscribe to Birchbox anymore but it did introduce me to some of my very favorite products I wouldn't have found otherwise.  It's a good box for a small "Treat Yo'Self" moment each month.

$10.00/month or $110.00/year

Ipsy's signature thing is that each month, you get five cosmetic products in a new specially designed make-up bag.  At first, I loved this, but then I realized I had no idea what to do with a pile of make-up bags that didn't exactly fit my aesthetic.  Ipsy is more make-up oriented than birchbox.  They do have a lot of brands I hadn't heard of before, but it really did open my mind to that whole big make-up filled world.  Ipsy was a fun subscription and I liked seeing if I would get the "must-have" product of that month. (Spoiler Alert: I never got it.)

Me & the Sea

I love living by the sea and luckily, this weekend gave me opportunity to take advantage of it.  My friends and I explored Daufuskie Island, a small island off the coast of Hilton Head where golf carts are pretty much your only mode of transportation.  It was the most relaxing day I can remember in a while, despite the slight sunburn.  Of course, knowing my obsession with palm prints, this amazing romper from Old Navy made perfect sense to wear for the day.  I love this print so much that I also picked it up in a midi-length dress for work.

Seeing all the beautiful sights on Daufuskie made me think that it might be time to look into getting a camera.  Anyone out there have some suggestions?  I'm a total newbie to photography!  (Please wish me luck--I'll need it.)

What I'm loving right now: BeautyKind

Recently, my younger sister introduced me to BeautyKind, a website that donates 5% of your purchase to the charity of your choice (I picked the Make A Wish Foundation!).  Immediately, I was intrigued and pleasantly surprised by their selection.  After I saw that they had my favorite blemish treatment possibly of all time, I was hooked.

The best part?  If you click here and sign up, you get $25 to use on BeautyKind!  Just create an account, pick your charity, and get to shopping!

Luckily, there's a ton of stuff on their website to choose from, so I've linked my favorite products below to hopefully help you narrow it down a bit.

Put a bow on it.

Sorry for the quality of these pictures, y'all!  It was literally about to break into the storm to end all storms here on Hilton Head, so the cloudy weather didn't make for the best light for photos.  Nonetheless, I couldn't resist showing off this ammmmmmazing Kate Spade dress! It's a t-shirt material and so darn comfy PLUS it's the perfect length for work. But the best part?

How great is that bow detail on the collar?  Little details like that are why I love Kate Spade--there's always a touch of whimsy in their clothing and accessories.  If you live near a Kate Spade outlet, I recommend that you run, don't walk there because even though this dress is part of the main line, you can find it there!  If pink ain't your thang, it also comes in black and a pretty snazzy t-shirt as well.

I am absolutely not allowed to even look at the Kate Spade website right now (because I will buy everything) but this dress is there as well and an extra 25% off until July 7th.  Holidays that celebrate America always seem to have the best sales--Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving.  So if it's too hot and you don't have access to the ocean like me, I 100% recommend shopping since it's apparently the American way.
